Brief History
1957-1962
The establishment of the Dairy Training and Research Institute (DTRI) was conceptualized in 1957 through the initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). After four years, in April 1961, the Philippine government officially established DTRI through a memorandum of agreement signed by the University of the Philippines (UP) president and the Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) secretary. The Institute was envisioned to be semi-autonomous under the general administrative supervision of UP and located on the campus of the College of Agriculture (CA) in Los Baños, Laguna.
1970's, 1980's, 1900's
From the time that DTRI was established, the DTRI Library started its operation with 3 Library Staff and a total collection of 3,000 hardcover books, 400 serial titles, and 350 pamphlets on dairying, both local and foreign. Its services extend to DTRI staff, research workers, trainees, visitors, and students of UPLB. Moreover, in the 1990s, most of the reference collections of the Library were transferred to the College of Veterinary Medicine Library, which served as a communal library for the Institute of Animal Science (IAS), DTRI, and CVM. This move made reading materials on livestock and poultry available in one location, which was also more accessible to library users. A small reading room (DTRI Reading room) was maintained to house the remaining reference collections. DTRI Annual Reports, Journals, manuals, thesis, and other materials about dairying are the collections that can be found in the DTRI Reading Room. Computers, printers, and photocopying machines were available for the users. The reading room serves as a learning and collaboration space for researchers, faculty, staff, and trainees from across the country who want to learn about dairying.
2020
Unfortunately, the building was gutted down by a conflagration last July 8, 2020. All hardcover reading materials were burned along with the other facilities and equipment housed in the building.
